Introducing our new 2019-2020 Program Coordinators

Running the PBSC-UVic Chapter for 2018-2019 has been a rewarding and exciting experience. We have been pleased with the growth of our chapter, the immense out-pouring of support from the community, and the hard work and dedication of our volunteers.

Although we are sad to leave, we are also very excited to be passing on the torch to two amazing new Program Coordinators, Nicholas Picard and Lauren Sutherland:

Nick will be taking on the role of Summer Program Coordinator starting in May 2019. Nick graduated with a BA in Linguistics from UVic in 2013. Since then, he has studied design and fine art at various schools on the Island. He has volunteered as an events coordinator and as an art instructor. He loves cats and board games. His passion for access to justice brought him to UVic Law in 2018.

Over the course of the summer, Nick will be connecting with community organizations and working alongside them to develop projects for the upcoming school year. He will also be organizing and planning events, and recruiting student volunteers.

If you’re a community organization interested in a project for the 2019-2020 academic year, please contact Nick in May via e-mail: pbsc.uvic@gmail.com.

Lauren Sutherland will be our new School Year Coordinator starting in September 2019. Lauren received her B.A. and M.A. Honours in English Literature from the University of Toronto and is looking forward to starting her second year of law school at the University of Victoria. While studying at the University of Toronto, Lauren worked as a staff writer for Munch magazine, an Editorial Associate for the Acta Victoriana literary journal and as an Editorial Intern for Flare magazine. Upon graduation, Lauren had the opportunity to work for York University as a Content and Student Outreach Specialist during the 2017 labour dispute. This experience developed her interest in the intersection between law, justice and language as force of social change. Lauren has previously volunteered as a Researcher with Pro Bono Students Canada. In her spare time, Lauren enjoys reading, listening to podcasts and exploring B.C.’s beautiful outdoors.

During the school year, Lauren will be recruiting and supervising students, planning events, and connecting PBSC with students and the community.

The current coordinators will be in the office until April 1, 2019. At that time, the office will be closed for the month until the new Summer Coordinator takes over in May. We are so happy to have Nick and Lauren on the team; best of luck to you both!
